Genesis 2:1-3

Prayer and Preparation
As we study the discipline of sabbath, spend a few minutes to ask the Lord’s blessing on your study. Ask that the discipline would stoke your desire; a desire for delight, for holiness, and for intimacy with our heavenly Father. Then, carefully read Genesis 2:1-3.

Study

On the seventh day God rested. From what can be known about God in the scriptures, what does this mean? Was God tired; did He need rest? If not, why did he rest, and from what was He resting?

When you think of the word “sabbath,” what comes to mind?

In Exodus 20:8-11, God uses this creation account to explain the fourth commandment. According to these verses in Exodus, why should we sabbath?

What does observing the Sabbath mean in our context? How does keeping it make us holy (distinct, separate and set apart) in 2023?

Application
Have you ever practiced observing the sabbath? If so, what has that looked like? If not, what has stopped you?

How might you be able to keep the sabbath moving forward? What steps need to be taken? (practically and mentally)
