Ridgeline Study Prompts

Psalm 122

Prayer and Preparation
As you prepare to study Psalm 122, spend a few minutes in contemplative prayer. Ask the Lord to bring peace to your heart and mind as you place yourself under the authority of the text. Thank the Lord that He is a God of peace and that Christ came to grant us the ability to personally experience it.

Study

Psalm 122 opens with the psalmist recalling his decision to make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, followed with his arrival in the city. If you could speculate, what kinds of thoughts and feelings would a person who just made that pilgrimage be experiencing upon arrival?

Verses 3 through 5 describe the majestic nature of the city. What were the attributes the psalmist highlighted? How do those attributes speak to experiencing peace?

Verses 6 through 9 express the prayers and desires of the psalmist. In your own words summarize the hopes of the psalmist and why the future he hopes for would be a good thing.

Application
In Hebrew the word “peace” is pronounced “shalom”. The name Jerusalem means “city of peace”. So, for the pilgrims of psalms, making it to Jerusalem was pursuing a literal way for them to find peace. Where do you personally find your peace? In what tangible ways do you really sense peace and wholeness with God?
