Ridgeline Study Prompts

Psalm 121 and 124

Prayer and Preparation
My prayer for you this week is that your time in these psalms builds your courage and strengthens your resolve in whatever struggles you are facing. These two Songs of Ascent remind us that our help comes from the Lord. Take a few minutes in humble submission to God’s sovereignty and goodness, boldly asking for his Spirit as you study. Then carefully and thoughtfully read Psalm 121 and 124.

Study

Psalm 121 can be outlined in four two-verse stanzas: God is our help, who is awake, protecting and watchful. If this psalm was recited during the pilgrimage to Jerusalem how might have this song been an encouragement to those who sang it in the original context?

Psalm 124 paints a dire situation with vivid imagery. What are some of the feelings and circumstance the author described in these eight verses?

What are the shared ideas or themes between these two Songs of Ascent?

Application
Where do you need “help” from the Lord this week? In what ways are you feeling swallowed up or swept away?

How can you lift your eyes to see the Lord’s watchful protection this week? Is it reaching out to a spiritual partner, writing out a promise found in Scripture, or perhaps time in prayer and fasting? When you settle on an action plan make sure to carry it out this week, before you forget, then enjoy the ways God shows Himself able to deliver.
