Psalm 109

Prayer and Preparation

As you sit down to spend time studying this week’s passage, remember - we don’t read the bible to be finished, we read the bible to be changed. This week’s psalm is a tough one, so make sure to spend some time in prayer, asking the Lord to help you learn and apply His word this week.

Study

In verses 2-5 David shares the cause of his concern. In your own words, what was it that was causing him to write the lament?

Psalm 109 is an imprecatory psalm. That means it’s a psalm that is requesting God’s vengeance. Imprecatory psalms can seem severe and almost out of place from what we expect the Bible to teach us. What are some of the harsh requests, found in verses 6-20, that catch your attention?

In verses 21-29, we read of David’s plea for help. What does this teach you about anger and vengeance, and how God meets us in such feelings?

Application

Have you ever felt betrayed or hurt? How have you processed those feelings in the past? How can this psalm help shape the way you may handle those kinds of circumstances in the future?
