Ridgeline Study Prompts

Psalms 72

Prayer and Preparation

This past week we studied the beauty of waiting on the Lord. Take a minute or two now to quiet your heart through prayer. Then enter this time of study with an anticipation that the Lord will speak. Take your time, wait on the Lord. Pray that God grows your hunger for His presence during this time.

Study

Psalm 72 is headed as being of Solomon. It is a prayer for the reign of the one God has anointed king. It starts with an opening and ends with a closing, which is actually the closing of Book 2 of the Psalms. The body of this song is 4 sections. How would you summarize the focus of the prayer in each of the sections?

Verses 2-4

Verses 5-11

Verses 12-14

Verses 15-17

How does the closing section (verses 18-19) speak to the ultimate purpose of the preceding prayer?

From what you know in scripture about Solomon’s reign as king, how do you think he lived up to this prayer for God’s blessing? Where in his life was the prayer answered and in what ways might he have fallen short?

Application
Ultimately, true justice and righteousness, prosperity, worldwide reign, longevity, and living to God’s glory can only be found and fulfilled in Christ. If you could write out hopes and goals for how you would like the rest of your life to go, how do these five goals relate? Is Jesus’ involvement necessary in your life for you to fulfill these goals? Or are you aspiring to things that you can accomplish on your own?
