Philippians 3
Prayer and Preparation
You will be reminded as you study Philippians 3 that religious works matter very little when compared to actually knowing Jesus. Spend time in prayer before studying. Ask the Lord to make Himself known during your time in study. Pray for the Spirit’s help to see, hear and understand what the Lord might have for you to learn and apply this week.
Study
In verses 5-6 Paul gives a list of his religious pedigree and accomplishments. Look at his list and write down the significance of each one.
In chapter 2 Paul taught on the humility of Christ and those who follow Him. How do verses 7-11 of chapter 3 help shape an attitude of humility? What perspective is given that might make humility a logical response?
Verses 17-21 give the reader a glimpse into what it looks like to live a life ruled by selfish ambition. What does it look like in our present circumstances when we live like our citizenship is here on earth and not in heaven?
Application
In contrast to our last question, what does it look like when we live a life that believes our citizenship is in heaven? For you to grow in living for a heavenly Kingdom, how might that shape your decisions, mindset, or behavior? Are there any changes you can make in your daily living to be more aligned with this way of thinking and living? Tell a spiritual partner how the Holy Spirit is challenging or encouraging you in this area. Don’t try to walk out your faith in isolation. Invite other believers into the process.
