Ridgeline Study Prompts

Advent - Joy

Prayer and Preparation
The coming of Christ is a joyous event. As we start our study in the third week of Advent, take a few moments to reflect on the hope and peace we have already studied. Pray for the Holy Spirit’s help in your study of the topic of joy.

Study
Read John 15:8-11. In verse 11, Jesus explained that what was said in the previous verses was said so that His “joy may be in you and that your joy may be full.” Paraphrase or summarize what it is that brings joy to the fullest to us as disciples?

Read John 16:9-24. Summarize these verses and explain how sorrow and joy interact with each other in this passage.

Read Luke 2:8-11. What is the “good news of great joy” that the angels were talking about?

Application
How do you experience the joy of the Lord in your life? What does that look like for you?

How do you make sense of joy and sorrow being so prevalent in our world at the same time? Do you believe it’s possible to experience joy and sorrow at the same time, and where do you see that viewpoint in Scripture?
