Ridgeline Study Prompts
Psalms 77
Prayer and Preparation
As this psalm highlights, there are times where even as we study the Bible, we don’t really sense the presence of God. Whether we feel it or not, your time in the Word is sacred. Pray that the Lord would bless your study and that you would gain a real understanding of His goodness; no matter how you feel during this discipline.
Study
What seems to be the psalmist’s overall frame-of-mind in the first 4 verses of Psalm 77?
In verses 5 through 9 the psalmist asks some questions about God. Summarize or paraphrase the kinds of questions asked in these verses.
Even while searching and wrestling, the psalmist displays a proper response to the uncertainty. He rehearses truth to himself. What does he remind himself in verses 10 through 20?
Application
Can you think of a time you felt stuck in suffering or sin? Maybe it’s a sin you just can’t seem to get past, no matter how often you bring it before the Lord. Maybe it’s a type of suffering that just doesn’t go away. Or perhaps is something like chronic pain, sustained depression, a fractured relationship that seems beyond repair, etc. Write down what comes to your mind. Then rehearse the ways that Scripture combats this pain, these doubts, the uncertainty you feel. What does the Bible tell us is true in, or in spite of, your situation? Go ahead and write out the Scripture the Holy Spirit brings to mind or shows you in study. Then put begin to put that passage to memory and allow the discipline of hiding it away in your heart to help encourage your soul.
