Ridgeline Study Prompts

Psalm 84

Prayer and Preparation

Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 2:14 things that come from the Spirit of God can only be discerned through the Spirit. Charles Spurgeon called Psalm 84, “the pearl of Psalms,” and said, “this is one of the most sweet of the Psalms of peace.” As you prepare to study God’s word, join me in praying that God would open our hearts and our minds to all He has for us in Psalm 84. Read it several times this week and meditate upon it.

Study

Read verses 1-4 again. Compare these four verses to Psalm 42:1-5. What is similar and what is different in these deeply felt songs? What do you think the psalmist is saying in verse 84:3?

Read verses 5-7. Try to describe both the circumstances and the heart states of this group of people? List any promises you can draw out of these verses.

Read verses 8-9. The author calls God by several different names in this psalm. When he pleads to the God of Jacob, what do you think in on his heart?

Read verses 10-12. Try to write one sentence that could be the theme from these 3 verses. What is your favorite line or phrase from this section?

Application
There are three sections in Psalm 84 where people are pronounced blessed, and there is a very short prayer. Which part of this psalm speaks most to your heart (either because you can relate or because you long to experience this blessing)? Write something down and share it with a spiritual partner.
